We are living in unprecedented times. Many of us have had significant changes in our lives, this past year and 2021 looks like a continuation of these changes due to the ongoing pandemic. We’ve had to make tough choices and faced many challenges, from being laid off, working from home, figuring childcare, or even teaching our kids at home. These challenges have left so many of us in despair as we try to work, live, and learn amid a pandemic.

This “new normal” may be leaving us apprehensive about the future and our goals. Here are a few tips to stay positive when facing adversity.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7

It is easy to wallow in our sorrow when times are tough. During these times, flip your thinking and focus on God’s blessings. You woke up this morning. You hugged your kids. You have a job. Take time to celebrate the good things however small they may be.

Place your worries in God’s hands. Remember that this too shall pass and you may have needed to change careers or even spend more time with your kids. Think about what God is telling you during this difficult time and be open to his message.

Know that you are not alone. Every day we are inundated with news of the pandemic death toll and the uncertainty of the economy. Our lives have all been touched by the pandemic in various ways. Find ways to connect with others going through similar challenges.

Think of short-term and long-term solutions. Can you find a job in another field? Can you get extra help for your child from school? Can you ask to work from home to care for your kids? Are there family members or friends that can support each other by living together?
